Hello World

Software developer and coffee enthusiast. Raised in Alaska, working in Dallas.

I graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2016 with a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Psychology. I work for a pretty cool consulting company that hired me out of college to be a part of their Integration and Data Services team (aka I'm a Software Developer), and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

Since the stress of work pales compared to the stress of taking 19-24 hours of classes a semester, I've taken it upon myself to create mini-projects for myself that involve data mining, photography, and social gamification (and cute animals). If you're interested in any of those things you can read about the strategies here, or you can follow me on Instagram and watch the experiments in action (@jonesdoeslife or @zoraflorasays).

Had a ball attending the @wintechworldseries event Had a ball attending the @wintechworldseries event in Houston this week

It was a much appreciated opportunity to network with other female technologists @lifeatcredera I have only seen across the screen (if ever), and hear about resilience in terms of technology, business, and career

If you want to see the takeaways from the sessions I attended, they’re saved under “WITT22 Conf” at the top of my profile

See ya there next year 😉

A note on the pandemic: Toddlers and cats are now A note on the pandemic: Toddlers and cats are now welcome meeting participants, in virtual happy hours I’ve learned more about my teammates’ ability to draw than their choice of alcohol, and the chance to work from anywhere with an internet connection has allowed me to double the time shared with family in far off places. We are more in-touch with each other than ever, even though we are physically apart. ⠀
⠀
At the same time, halfway into our second year, the local website reporting hospital capacity and death tolls is still bookmarked and visited regularly, the feeling of dread associated with hearing about an exposure, positive test, or risky situation has become eerily familiar, and the lack of perfect science and global response has nurtured an undercurrent of tension in social interactions because, though we are all experiencing this at the same time, based on geography, age, industry, socioeconomic status, living situation, health, prior experiences, and tolerance for risk… we are not all experiencing this equally ⠀
⠀
Being a technologist in a stable job in the US during this time has been a surreal privilege. Though there have been lifestyle learning curves, stress, and a lot of grief brought to the surface both by illness and inequalities, in many ways life here has evolved into a different flavor of routines that always were. ⠀
⠀
I am in awe of human resilience and ability to adapt, but am desperately looking forward to a time when these unprecedented times are in the history books, not what we call “Wednesday”⠀

📖 Reading The Unicorn Project felt like Gene Ki 📖 Reading The Unicorn Project felt like Gene Kim has been following me around and taking notes on my life ⠀
⠀
While the Phoenix Project focused on an IT organization as a whole from the perspective of an executive, Unicorn Project illustrates life as a developer in an environment where a lot of time is spent waiting for requests to be fulfilled by people you may or may not know, where automated testing isn’t regularly used, and where trying to improve the process is met with a lot of pushback ⠀
⠀
It was realistic and funny storytelling tackling very real organizational decisions (like making QA a separate department) and providing tangible examples of how to remove barriers ⠀

QOTD: What books did you read when you were growin QOTD: What books did you read when you were growing up?
.
I always loved adventures, science fiction, and poetry (CS Lewis, Gregory Maguire, Douglas Addams, and Emily Dickinson are still some of my favorite authors)
.
As I got a little bit older I started enjoying essays, short stories, and memoirs more (Camus, Fitzgerald, Borges)
.
I hugely appreciate what @rebelgirls is doing with their new chapter books. They’re showcasing women who lived unusual lives for their time periods - Ada Lovelace with the development of programming, and Madam CJ Walker’s entrepreneurial spirit
.
These would make great bedtime stories for little ones (I got through both in about an hour), and the illustrations are beautiful
.
One item off my Christmas list, a dozen more to go 😉
“How old are you? When did you start programming “How old are you? When did you start programming? How much time did you put in to be skilled at programming? Did you just focus on it or did you do something else..? Thanks..” - Fatima⠀
⠀
I turned 25 this year and was first introduced to programming when I was 15 at a summer camp held by a local community college back home in Alaska⠀
⠀
After that summer I taught myself a little bit of Java (from an online course) and after another summer shadowing a developer and doing QA decided I wanted to study Computer Science at university ⠀
⠀
So I did! I spent four years at university studying Computer Science, Psychology, Russian, and Chinese⠀
⠀
Though I’ve been working full time as a developer for over three years I’m definitely still learning new programming skills on a daily basis. A lot of my job is learning how to learn with new technologies, so I feel like a beginner most of the time even though I’ve technically been coding for a decade ☺️⠀

QOTD: Front-end, backend, or everything in between QOTD: Front-end, backend, or everything in between? ⠀
⠀
I get this question a lot, and in practice I’m a full stack developer. As a technology consultant we tend to work on whatever needs working for a project: interface and associated analytics, the third party integrations, the APIs, the database, the server setup and devOps process, you name it⠀
⠀
For me that has typically translated to doing one or the other for a particular project, sometimes in long stints (working on an API for over a year) or in smaller chunks (a few months helping implement a replatform and redesign) ⠀
⠀
What I like about this structure is that it lets me focus on one thing (language, application, etc.) for a concentrated period of time and become competent in it, while at the same time getting to learn all of the parts and pieces of what makes for good software from SQL to CSS and being able to continually learn something new on the job⠀

Liquibase (n): A tool to track and apply changes t Liquibase (n): A tool to track and apply changes to a database ⠀
⠀
This project is the first time I’ve used Liquibase though it’s been around since 2006 (and this edition of #tenwordexplanations does not do justice to how exciting it is to use)⠀
⠀
My team is using it because our java application will eventually be connecting to a database which doesn’t yet exist, and we’re dependent on another team to get that up and running⠀
⠀
Using Liquibase allows us to create a script to both create the right tables on our local computers and insert mock data so we can continue development ⠀
⠀
As the other team updates the real database we can change ours with a couple lines of code and track the changes that have been made without overwriting any data we‘ve already started working with (this is one of the biggest advantages of using Liquibase instead of plain SQL scripts, the other being that it‘s database agnostic)⠀
⠀
Have you used Liquibase or a tool like it? What’s your ten word explanation?⠀

“How are bonuses structured at Credera? What was “How are bonuses structured at Credera? What was your last bonus?” - Sarah Chilk⠀
⠀
Whether you’re considering changing companies or careers, salary and bonus can be a huge factor. While I don’t feel comfortable sharing my own on the wide world of Instagram, I would absolutely suggest checking out our (or any) company on @Glassdoor ⠀
⠀
Not only does Glassdoor collect reviews on companies, they also collect salaries (and bonus information) at different experience levels. This means that you don’t just see one person’s view, but the aggregate of what people have reported over the years based on tenure (how long they’re at the company) in addition to what potential pay differences could be between different positions. ⠀
⠀
Have a question like Sarah that you want to get out there? Submit it at the link in my bio ⬆️! Have a research method that you use to find out about companies? Comment below ⬇️⠀
